WHOIS Lookup

Registrar, dates and nameservers for any domain, via RDAP.

Frequently asked questions

What is a WHOIS lookup?

A WHOIS lookup shows public registration data for a domain name: which registrar manages it, when it was created and when it expires, its status codes and its nameservers.

What is RDAP and how does it differ from WHOIS?

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the standardized, machine-readable successor to the old WHOIS protocol. This tool queries RDAP, so the data is structured and consistent across registries.

Why can't I see the domain owner's name or email?

Registrars and registries redact personal contact details in most cases, because of privacy rules such as GDPR and because of privacy-protection services. Registrar, dates and nameservers are normally still public.

What do status codes like clientTransferProhibited mean?

They are EPP status codes set by the registrar or registry. clientTransferProhibited stops the domain being transferred to another registrar without unlocking it, and clientDeleteProhibited stops it being deleted. They are usually a good sign, not a problem.

What does it mean if no record is found?

The domain is probably not registered, or its registry does not publish RDAP data. An unregistered result does not guarantee the name is available to buy.
