Frequently asked questions
How does this domain availability check work?
It asks the domain's registry directly over RDAP, the standard lookup protocol. If the registry has no record for the name, it is shown as available. If there is a record, the name is shown as registered along with its registrar and dates.
Is an available result guaranteed?
No. A name can be reserved, a premium-priced name, or in a grace or redemption period after expiring, and some of those show as unregistered in the registry. Always confirm with a registrar before you build plans around a name.
Why does a result say unknown?
Some extensions, such as .io and .co, do not publish registration data over RDAP. For those the tool can only look for DNS records: if the name has nameservers it is certainly taken, but if it has none the tool cannot tell, so it reports unknown rather than guessing. An unknown result can also mean the registry did not answer in time.
Can I search without typing an extension?
Yes. Type just the name, such as mybrand, and the tool checks it as .com, .net, .org, .info, .app, .dev and .xyz at once. Type a full name such as mybrand.com to check one extension.
What can I do if the domain I want is taken?
Look it up on the WHOIS page to see when it expires. Names that are not renewed eventually become available again, although popular names are usually caught quickly. Registering, buying and transferring domains happens at a registrar, which this site does not offer.
