Frequently asked questions

What is an IP address?

An IP address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet, so other servers know where to send data. It is assigned by your internet service provider.

Why is this different from the IP address on my device?

Devices on a home or office network usually have a private address like 192.168.1.20. Your router shares one public address with the internet using network address translation (NAT). This page shows that public address.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.7 and are running out. IPv6 addresses are much longer, like 2001:db8::1, and were created to provide far more addresses. Which one you see depends on what your network and device use.

Does my IP address reveal my exact location?

No. It points to an approximate area, usually your city or your provider's regional hub, never your street address.

Is my IP address static or dynamic?

Most home connections have a dynamic IP that your provider can change, for example when you restart your router. Business connections often pay for a static IP that stays the same.
